Snapped.

It happened. I snapped. The morning started out so great today. I woke up from a good night’s sleep. My wife had coffee ready. I sat down with my coffee and my phone to get the morning news. And one of the very first things that pops up is a story about Christians being angry over the design of the Starbucks Holiday cups. What?

I have seriously had it. I feel like I am going to go insane. How in the world is this a story that is garnering so much attention? A coffee shop decides not to put snowflakes on its cups and somehow all of Christendom is under attack? Give me a break!! I feel like the time we caught our dog standing on the counter in our kitchen eating a homemade birthday cake my wife had spent hours working on. Your eyes can’t believe what they are seeing. It’s that feeling of not knowing whether to laugh or scream. The only thing I can think to do is just stand and yell, “NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,” over and over and over until my voice goes completely out and I have no more breath in my lungs.

What is wrong with us?!? There are Christians in the middle east being beheaded for their beliefs and yet we feel righteous indignation because a secular coffee company doesn’t put snowflakes on their Christmas season cups? There are approximately 795 million people who will not have enough food to eat today and our rally cry is to demand Starbucks reintroduce Christmas into their marketing campaigns? There is probably someone living in a home in your neighborhood who is contemplating suicide at this very moment because they can’t face another holiday alone and you want to punish a company because they printed plain red cardboard cups?

I have never been more sad that I am right now. There is so much wrong in the world and we focus our energy on coffee cups?!? The defense is that, “NO – we aren’t upset just about coffee cups, we must defend Christmas as a whole which has long been under attack!!” First of all… NO IT ISN’T! Second of all, so what if it is?!? Read above about Christians getting beheaded and stuff. Wake up! We have got to be agents for change, not agents for the defense of Christmas.

I used to think people didn’t like Christians because of the truths that Jesus taught. The reality is, people don’t like Christians because we are willing to fight for snowflakes but will turn our backs on the hurting, the impoverished, the broken, the forgotten.

Please. Stop. Whoever started this madness, please stop.

Jesus, help us.
