Christians Talk Weird.

I’m a Christian. Probably the fact that pastor is in the name of this website gave you a clue to that already but if I am going to poke fun at Christians – I feel the need to readily identify that I am one. So, I’m a Christian. And we say some things weird. Sometimes. Lots Of Times.

I had not really thought about this until the other day I saw a Facebook post from one of my professors from Milligan where he went on a small (hilarious) rant about phrases he wished pastors wouldn’t use. I told him it was one of my favorite posts I had ever read. Like him, I’m not certain what drives our dialogue sometimes… I wonder if it’s us trying to be culturally relevant and cool but at the same time also trying to keep our words on a higher plane or are we are just so out of touch with the rest of the world that we have developed a sort of in-bred bizarre dialect called “Christianese.” That made up dialect makes sense to us but then we forget who our audience is and lay the weirdness out for everyone to behold – and then wonder why non-Christians look at us with mixtures of confusion, mild amusement and disdain… like the strange kid you knew in 7th grade that memorized the elven language from Lord of the Rings and spoke in it to answer questions in class.

The two examples my old professor pointed to were first, how many pastors he saw write something in their bios on their church website or personal blog that was a reference to their “smokin’ hot wife.” Go ahead and google it… it’s a thing. The second one Is the phrase, “we need to love on people.” Yuck. I do not like that phrase at all. It sounds gross.

It got me looking around online a little bit and I found way more bizarre stuff that “we” say… So much more stuff we say that sounds so very weird. Watch this. (Hint: Don’t get mad and offended. Just smile.)

(“Talk that talk so people know that you walk that walk.” hahaha You should check out their other videos too… they are some hilarious youngsters. Check them out at Blimey Cow.)

This one is hilarious too!!

“Dude… we had the sickest fellowship last night!” haha what is wrong with us?!? Why do we say things weird?

Hopefully you read this, watch those videos and feel superior because none of those phrases are things you say… But if you do…

Let’s not be so weird when we talk. Let’s not Christianese-speak about loving on people… let’s not try to be trendy and hip… let’s not worry so much about trying to say things that prove we are Christian … let’s actually show love by doing stuff for people… let’s help people who are in need of help… Let’s be more like Jesus.

Actually 1 John 3:18 says it pretty well… “… let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”

Talk Less. Do More. Perfect.
