I know for the last month or so I have been railing a bit on politics – but it is literally driving me to the point of madness. I said back on August 13th that the estimates were that this year’s Presidential election would set a record in advertising spending of about $5 billion dollars. Well that estimate it turns out was wrong. It was a bit short. The new estimates are that the cost could exceed $6 billion. $6,000,000,000.00! How… Which…. Why… What the… ?!?!?!? #%@&!!
I’m sorry – but this is insanity isn’t it?!? I just can’t understand how things have gotten to this point. I mean I guess a measly six billion dollars just doesn’t get you what it used to. In 2012 it gets you a bunch of ridiculous political ads about 2 men running for President of The United States. I guess I can understand how numb these guys have become to figures like millions and even billions. $6 billion dollars is barely enough to keep the Federal Government operating for half a day. Yep – about 12 hours. Billions schmillions. You have to get into trillions to catch anyone’s attention anymore. (In just the last four years, the amount of federal debt held by us – the citizens – will have more than doubled. That means that it is more than every year of every previous president – combined!) No wonder $6 billion is handled like it’s chump change. We rack up a trillion plus in debt every year…
But for the majority of us – a billion is still a pretty large number. Heck I see anything with more than 1 zero behind it and you have my attention. Here is a little math magic to help you get perspective on the numbers that the federal government dabbles in … If you make one dollar every second, you will have a million dollars in twelve days. Pretty good huh?? It gets better… It will take you 32 years to get to a billion… but here is the awesome one… it will take you more than 31,000 years to make a trillion dollars. Yes. That math is correct and yes it blows my mind too. These guys need to get their perspective back.
Doesn’t everyone agree? All average citizens… conservative and liberal alike? Political advertising is worthless and pointless.
Mr. President and Mr. Romney… Here is some advice from a naive and albeit inexperienced non-politician in Ohio… If you want us to know who you are and what you stand for… do it in a debate format… mano-a-mano, face to face and toe to toe on a stage… Do two of them or do 100 of them – whatever it takes to make sure that you have been heard and that you believe we are all crystal clear on your stances. Talk about yourself and not the other guy. We are all pretty smart and will be able to figure it out. The world will be a better place, our country will be stronger and maybe your fellow politicians will understand, finally, that the smoke and mirrors don’t work any more. Stop wasting this money and put it to work for something that matters… $6 billion could go a long way to something like – oh I don’t know… ending world hunger or something…
There. I feel marginally better.
And as I have said before… don’t try to guess my political leanings… unless you know me… You don’t know!
