What we need is …

There is some disturbing stuff happening in our world. I know that’s nothing new – but it seems to get worse every day doesn’t it? I mean it’s exhausting watching the news anymore … or maybe I’m just getting old and unable to cope with as much as I used to be able to… But I saw this video today of a tourist being beaten outside of the courthouse in Baltimore. It was a 31 year old male being attacked and robbed by a group of 10 assailants. There is an uproar now because the police chief is ruling it a robbery – not a hate crime. Some say it should be a hate crime because it was 10 black assailants on the 1 white male.

I think it is a hate crime … though I’d say that if it was white on white, white on black, black on black, black on asian, asian on eskimo and the list goes on forever. The reality is – that any crime like this… is definitely forged in hate. How could it be anything else? I feel weary just thinking about the reality of the level of hate that exists in the world. From groups of people on street corners, politicians on a national stage, teachers in classrooms, even ministers in pulpits. There is a darkness that is spreading in people’s hearts and it makes me really sad.

So what are we to do? The “we” being us as Christ Followers? Well – we follow Him. We listen to the words of Jesus…

‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment. “And a second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40)

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” ( John 13:34-35)

“Whatever you want others to do for you, do so for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” ( Matthew 7:12)

“But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward in heaven will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.” ( Luke 6:35)

“Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many.” ( Mark 10:43-45)

“If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.” ( John 13:14-15)

What we need is to … Love God, Love People. Amen.
